In the beginning was the idea: how we turn sketches into custom monument signs
You have roughly three seconds at trade shows, brand promotion events, and live events to capture a visitor’s attention. A custom monument sign doesn’t just fill that time — it completely owns it. That’s why forward-thinking brands are increasingly choosing dimensional, sculptural signage: not as decoration, but as a strategic brand asset created through a carefully design-to-build process.
At Royal Foam Art Design, we take sketches and ambitious concepts and turn them into large-scale 3D signs for clients across various industries — from startup booths to stages for Fortune 500 companies. Here’s exactly how the fabrication process works from start to finish.
What are custom monument sign for business and art events?
Custom monumental signs are branded, dimensional pieces designed to make an impact in commercial and artistic spaces. This category includes 3D letters, oversized logos, sculptural props, stage sets, and exhibit booths. Instead of flat printed materials, these are physically imposing objects that embody a company’s concept and invite interaction.
You’ll find monument 3D signs at:
- Trade shows and expos;
- Brand activations and pop-ups;
- Corporate events and product launches;
- Festival stages and storefronts;
- Permanent retail and architectural displays.
When executed well, a custom monumental sign becomes the focal point of any space — the thing people walk toward, photograph, and remember.
Why EPS foam is the material of choice for 3D logos & monument signs
When it comes to creating custom monument signs, choosing the proper material is already half the battle. For our projects, we use high-density expanded polystyrene (EPS) combined with a hard polyurea coating. This combination allows us to create near-perfect signs for events. And these aren’t just empty words. Here are the properties that speak in favor of EPS foam:
- Lightweight. Finished products are easy to transport and install, requiring no heavy lifting equipment or structural reinforcement;
- Cutting precision. Using CNC machines, EPS blocks can be shaped into virtually any form with tight tolerances. Additionally, structures of any required size can be manufactured (anything that cannot be made from a single block can be designed as a modular item);
- Cost-effectiveness. You get premium visual results without the weight or cost of metal fabrication;
- Weather resistance. The polyurea coating makes the finished monumental signs resistant to UV rays, high humidity, and durable enough for multi-day outdoor events and interaction with people.
- Ease of maintenance. The structures require no complex upkeep (periodic pressure washing is sufficient).
As you can see, this type of sign is literally an “indestructible” product. It will last for many seasons, withstanding not only all weather challenges but also daily minor impacts with ease.
Furthermore, the EPS structure itself fits perfectly into the concept of customization, which is our company’s specialty. The material takes paint and various textured finishes beautifully. We can offer you any finish option, from matte and glossy to metallic and distressed, as well as individually selected colors to match your brand’s palette. If your brand guidelines specify a specific Pantone shade, we will match it.
Step 1: Conceptualization (spoiler: no need for vector files here)
All the large projects start with a fruitful initial discussion, and our company is not an exception. Our customers usually bring us sketches, reference photos, or at least a general monument sign idea of the scope and vision. We carefully review every sketch, listen to every word, and use that as our basis.
Here’s how the conceptualization phase works in practice.
A customer contacted us before CES 2025 show in Las Vegas. The company wanted to create a 3D monument for their booth based on their logo. Their input consisted of size ideas and corporate colors, but nothing ready for production was available yet.
Our specialists analyzed the case and took steps in accordance with a dedicated monument sign design process.
- Kickoff call. Here we defined what the objectives of the event are, its limitations, visitor traffic pattern, and what the objective of the event should be.
- Asset intake. The client provided a flat file with the logo, as well as the brand’s reference colors. For our part, we helped determine the scale, the object’s orientation in space, and possible lighting conditions.
- 3D modeling. Our team converted 2D assets into production-ready 3D formats, scaled the proportions, and modeled the object at full size
- Material and finish consultation. Since the clients weren’t entirely sure which of the proposed options could be realized in 3D, we showed them several examples from past projects, reviewed foam options, matte and glossy finishes, and mounting configurations.
- Design approval. Every dimension and detail was signed off on before a single cut was made.
- Color matching. After deciding on a finish, we offered some samples painted in different shades as well as virtual views to help them select an appropriate color match. Our company specializes in providing customers with a custom color match service, and it is possible to create any shade of the desired color.
The result is this 14-foot dimensional sign, placed in an area where there is heavy foot traffic. The sign was sent in our custom-made protective case, guaranteeing its safe delivery. After delivery of the item, all the customer needed to do was unpack it and put the swirl logo in its designated place.
Step 2: Custom sign manufacturing: how the process works
As soon as we receive approval on the design, production starts immediately. Here is a quick overview of the basic steps of the process:
- Foam blocks processing using CNC machines for cutting the required shapes;
- Shaping the cut-out pieces manually. Polishing the edges and surfaces to achieve the necessary effect.
- Hard coating. A polyurea layer is applied on the surface of the foam to create a rigid, impact-resistant shell.
- Color application according to the brand’s palette. Painting is performed with the utmost accuracy; multicolor, gradient, and special effects are available.
- Assembling and measuring. Larger parts are put together, checked for durability, and prepared for transport.
And this is how the computer design comes to life, such as a 3D sign in the form of a logo, letters, or mascot statue. No matter what sign concept you come up with, we can guarantee that the result we deliver will be brand-appropriate, durable, and eye-catching.
Installation: open the crate, done
Delivery and installation terms may vary depending on the project’s specific requirements. However, we always strive to organize all processes so that installation proceeds smoothly, even in high-traffic areas.
Every piece ships in a custom-built crate sized and shaped for that specific sign. This ensures maximum protection during transport.
What clients get on-site:
- Fully prefabricated product — the sign is delivered ready for use;
- No tools required for most installations;
- Clear setup instructions where any minor assembly is needed (e.g., screwing the base to the platform);
- Lightweight by design — even large pieces can be moved and positioned by a two-person team.
For example, with the swirl logo for CES 2025, the process went something like this: all the client had to do was open the crate, lift the part, and place it on the base. Setting it up at a major trade show took less than 10 minutes.
It’s just as easy to work with individual 3D letters. They are incredibly lightweight and securely packed in protective boxes. Whether they’re used as a photo backdrop, stage accents, or signage at the booth, installation is quick and hassle-free.
EPS signage is cost-effective for you, and here’s why
A well-designed custom monument sign isn’t a decoration — it’s a key indicator of your entire campaign’s success. This element helps you:
- Stand out among the crowd of booths and vendors;
- Create a photo zone (which is also a source of UGC content);
- Make your brand more recognizable;
- Turn passersby into actual visitors
Our clients have shared all these points with us in enthusiastic feedback. After events, the owners of the signs we designed consistently noted that:
- Stand traffic increased — dimensional pieces act as physical anchors that draw people from across the floor;
- Organic social media content grew — photograph the sign and post it, extending brand reach well beyond the event itself;
- Guests remembered the brand better after the exhibition — a sculptural centerpiece was more memorable than any banner or digital display.
There’s another cost-saving benefit — an unspoken one. The EPS sign can be reused, even multiple times: technically, it can withstand all that, and its lightweight construction allows it to be transported from place to place. So a single element offers you a multitude of possibilities — and even more than you could have imagined.
Ready to build something that stops traffic?
You know who to turn to. A flat sign simply tells people your name. A custom monument 3D sign, on the other hand, makes your brand impossible to ignore.
Whether you’re planning a trade show activation, a product launch, or a permanent architectural installation, Royal Foam Art Design’s design-to-build process handles everything – from the initial sketch to final delivery.
As you’ve already seen, the starting point can be not only a finished drawing, but also a photo or even a verbal description. And if you need some extra inspiration, explore our portfolio.
